The Digging into Math ©2014 Program is a supplemental math curriculum series based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Grades 3, 4 and 5. The program consists of 9 standards-based units. Each unit contains 7 to 14 lessons that specifically address targets related to clusters in the CCSS with a focus on the critical/major topics at each grade.

DIGGING INTO MATH OVERVIEW

Unit Topics

The Digging into Math©2014 program can be used to supplement basal curriculum or as an intervention to addressing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). Each unit includes CCSSM content standards and the standards for mathematical practice. The lessons in each unit can be done individually for additional practice on a specific target or the unit can be done as a whole to address domains.

The table below illustrates the topics covered in Digging into Math. The rows are organized by grade level and the columns are organized by strand. Some teachers may find it helpful to use just their grade level units while others (specifically in 4th and 5th grade) may find students need to strengthen pre-requisite skills in a domain prior to their grade level unit. In this case, teachers should move up the columns to find the units or lessons covering the skills needed for their students to be successful in their grade level standards.

As an Intervention

Digging into Math may be helpful when working with small groups of students who show deficiencies in specific standards in the CCSSM, to include the content standards and the standards for mathematical practice. The Digging into Math assessments, local assessment data or state assessment data can be used to identify areas of weakness to guide teachers in assigning students specific lessons as interventions. The lessons can then be used during differentiated instruction or as a Tier 2 intervention.

This program may also be useful in special education classrooms or summer school programs for pre-teaching or interventions. Students may need to become proficient with previous grade level standards prior to successfully completing the topics addressed in grade-level standards. Digging into Math lessons within a unit are easily organized to guide teachers to pre-requisite units.

As a Guide for Teachers

The grade level standards addressed in the CCSSM may be topics that are new to teachers at a specific grade level or may be topics that require teachers to teach in greater depth than they have in past years. The Digging into Math program allows teachers to gain a better understanding of the grade level standards and how they are vertically aligned from one grade to the next.
